The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal William L. Douglas, Jr. (MCSN: 2103224), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as a Fire Team Leader serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 15 July 1966. During Operation HASTINGS, Corporal Douglas’ fire team was acting as the point for his squad when they came under automatic weapons fire from a North Vietnamese force, and one Marine was critically wounded. Directing his fire team to cover him, Corporal Douglas twice exposed himself to the enemy fire in attempts to reach the wounded Marine but was driven back each time by the intense fire. When he attempted to reach the wounded Marine the third time, he was mortally wounded and died instantly. Corporal Douglas’ courage, devotion to duty and complete disregard for his own safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
