The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Larry Donnell Doss (MCSN: 2370576), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gunner with Company G, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 20 September 1968, Company G was participating in a search and destroy operations south of DaNang when the left flank elements came under intense hostile small arms, automatic weapons and rocket fire, wounding numerous Marines. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Lance Corporal Doss skillfully maneuvered his men to the point of heaviest contact and directed the delivery of suppressive machine gun fire against the enemy positions. Alertly observing several injured Marines lying in an area dangerously exposed to the hostile fire, he fearlessly maneuvered across fifty meters of fire-swept terrain to their location and moved a wounded companion to a covered position. Completely disregarding his own safety, he boldly returned to the hazardous area and assisted another injured comrade to a location of relative safety despite the continuing enemy fire. Undaunted by the hostile rounds impacting near him, Lance Corporal Doss was maneuvering for a third time across the open area toward another injured Marine when he was mortally wounded. By his courage, resolute determination and selfless devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Doss inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
