The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class David Leonard Dolan (MCSN: 2192786), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with the First Platoon, Company G, Second Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 17 November 1966, during operations in the Phu Loc District, Private First Class Dolan’s fire team was serving as the point element for a platoon column when they came under intense enemy fire from a hillside directly to their front. The heavy volume of fire immediately pinned down the point element, wounding the point man and the Platoon Commander. Aware that the enemy’s position overlooked the column from the steep hillside and, disregarding his own safety, Private First Class Dolan rushed forward and assisted his wounded comrades. Firing aggressively as he ran, he succeeded in reaching the point man, even though he was wounded in the abdomen by enemy fire. Despite his serous wound, he continued to deliver fire on the enemy, rising to his knees and firing before being wounded a second time. His gallant actions disrupted the Viet Cong attack and allowed the remainder of the squad to move forward and rout the enemy. Private First Class Dolan’s fearless determination and perseverance undoubtedly saved the life of the point man and possibly the lives of other wounded comrades. By his courageous actions, inspiring initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Private First Class Dolan contributed to the successful accomplishment of his unit’s mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
