The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal David Warren Dillberg (MCSN: 2296859), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company G, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 22 January 1968, Corporal Dillberg’s platoon was assigned to assist a friendly unit which had sustained numerous casualties while heavily engaged with a large North Vietnamese Army force near the Con Thien Combat Base. Ignoring the intense automatic weapons, mortar, and artillery fire, Corporal Dillberg skillfully maneuvered his fire team through the hazardous area to assist the besieged unit. Locating several men who had become separated from their unit, he quickly deployed them to provide security for the evacuation of casualties. Completely disregarding his own safety, he boldly moved about the fire-swept terrain and assisted numerous casualties to covered positions. Subsequently returning to Con Thien, he alertly observed two wounded Marines who had wandered through a break in the wire encircling a minefield and had collapsed in the dangerous area. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, he fearlessly ran into the minefield and carried the men to positions of relative safety. His bold initiative and sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades inspired all who observed him and contributed immeasurably to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Corporal Dillberg upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
