The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Phillip Vasant Dennis (MCSN: 2433936), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company D, 3d Reconnaissance Battalion, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 17 December 1968, Private First Class Dennis was the Point Man during a long-range reconnaissance patrol being conducted north of the Ba Long Valley when he stepped on a well-concealed hostile mine. Hearing the sound of the detonating cap, he immediately shouted to nearby Marines to clear the surrounding area and, disregarding his own safety, steadfastly remained in position over the mind, absorbing the full impact of the explosion. Despite his extremely painful injuries, he resolutely remained alert and, although completely immobilized, attempted to continue in the performance of his duties. Realizing the demoralizing effect of the incident to his comrades, he encouraged and inspired them by his calm presence of mind until he was medically evacuated. His heroic actions and sincere concern for the welfare of his fellow Marines contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission by saving the lives of those men who were following him. By his courage, resolute determination and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Private First Class Dennis upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
