The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant George B. Davis (MCSN: 0-107803), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company D, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 12 November 1969, First Lieutenant Davis organized a platoon-sized reaction force to assist another Marine unit which was pinned down by elements of a North Vietnamese Army battalion occupying well-fortified bunkers in the Que Son Mountain area of Quang Nam Province. As the Marines approached the site of the beleaguered unit, they came under a heavy volume of hostile fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, First Lieutenant Davis rushed to the point of heaviest contact and, after rapidly assessing the situation, moved boldly among the men, shouting directions and encouragement. While skillfully maneuvering his reaction force to evacuate the casualties, he observed one of his wounded men fall in an open area. Heedless of the mortar and automatic weapons rounds impacting all around him, he fearlessly ran across the hazardous terrain to the man’s side and assisted him to a covered location. Then, unhesitatingly proceeding to a dangerously exposed vantage point, he skillfully directed fixed-wing air strikes close to his unit’s perimeter which enabled the Marines to retrieve the wounded men from open areas and assemble them for medical evacuation. Throughout the night, First Lieutenant Davis repeatedly exposed himself to the intense enemy fire as he directed the withdrawal of the Marines and their casualties to a landing zone and patrolled the perimeter to ensure the provision of maximum security. His heroic and determined actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in preventing excessive Marine casualties. By his courage, aggressive leadership, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, First Lieutenant Davis upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
