The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain [then First Lieutenant] Jerry L. Creed (MCSN: 0-110455), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as the Patrol Leader of an eight-man reconnaissance patrol in the Republic of Vietnam. On 5 November 1970, while on patrol in the Que Son Mountains, Captain Creed, through his dynamic and courageous leadership, safely brought his patrol through an intense conflict with a numerically superior enemy force while inflicting severe casualties on the enemy. During the engagement, Captain Creed, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, continually exposed himself to the enemy’s small-arms fire in order to cover his patrol’s movement and then to direct their fire and to mark targets for the fire of supporting aircraft. As a result of his resolute determination and resourcefulness, his patrol was able to hold the superior enemy force at bay for over four hours until the enemy broke off the engagement and fled into the surrounding mountains. Captain Creed’s inspiring leadership and selfless devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
