The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Torpedoman’s Mate First Class Carrol Wesley Duff (NSN: 2873357), United States Navy, for outstanding heroism and devotion to duty in remaining at his battle station, though wounded, while the Destroyer U.S.S. REID (DD-36() was afire and sinking as the result of an enemy air attack on 11 December 1944. Although seriously wounded by strafing, Torpedoman’s Mate First Class Duff, alone and in the face of determined attacks, maintained an effective fire against the enemy, until he and his machine gun were put out of action by a direct bomb hit. The gallant courage and utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Torpedoman’s Mate First Class Duff was in accordance with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
