The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Corporal Charles F. Hopkins, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 27 June 1862, while serving with Company I, 1st New Jersey Infantry, in action at Gaines Mill, Virginia. Corporal Hopkins voluntarily carried a wounded comrade, under heavy fire, to a place of safety; though twice wounded in the act, he continued in action until again severely wounded.
