The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Richard Ross Coomer (MCSN: 2397845), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Radio Operator with Company A, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 27 October 1968, Company A was conducting a search and destroy operation near the hamlet of Ky Long (2) in Quang Nam Province. As Corporal Coomer moved behind his platoon commander, relaying tactical directions to subordinate units, he alertly heard the triggering of the firing pin of a concealed enemy explosive device. Completely disregarding his own safety, he fearlessly remained in his dangerously exposed position, and as he shouted a warning to his companions, he was mortally wounded by the blast from the hostile explosive charge. His daring initiative and heroic effort inspired all who observed him and saved numerous Marines from possible death or serious injury. By his courage, sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Coomer contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
