The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Charles Leland Dozark (NSN: 0-161275), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as First Lieutenant and Damage Control Officer board the Destroyer U.S.S. HYMAN (DD-732), during the operations of the U.S. Naval Forces against Okinawa Gunto, on 6 April 1945. Fully aware of the danger involved, and at the risk of his own life, Lieutenant Dozark unhesitatingly rushed into an area of flames and of potential greater danger created by the possible explosion of torpedo warheads exposed to fire and carried to a safer place a severely wounded shipmate. A few seconds later a terrific explosion virtually demolished the area from which the wounded man had been carried.
