The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Daniel Joseph Cobb, III (MCSN: 0-85599), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Marine Observation Squadron SIX (VMO-6), Marine Aircraft Group THIRTY-SIX (MAG-36), First Marine Aircraft Wing, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 22 December 1967, Captain Cobb launched from the Khe Sanh Combat Base as Flight Leader of a section of UH-1E armed helicopters assigned the mission of assisting in the rescue of the crew of a downed F-4 Phantom aircraft deep within enemy controlled territory. Although his helicopter came under heavy enemy automatic weapons and anti-aircraft fire as he approached the hostile area, Captain Cobb steadfastly continued his flight until he located one of the downed crewmen. Even though learning that other aircraft in the area were heavily engaged with the enemy and realizing the urgency of the mission, he unhesitatingly decided to attempt the rescue operation. Unable to land his helicopter in the small zone and disregarding extremely intense enemy small arms fire, Captain Cobb boldly maneuvered into the zone, utilizing his rotor blades to cut a path through the small trees and dense foliage. Demonstrating exceptional airmanship and courage, Captain Cobb skillfully maintained a hovering position while directing a heavy volume of accurate fire against the enemy, enabling the downed Marine to reach the helicopter. Embarking the Marine only seconds before North Vietnamese soldiers overran the area, he maneuvered his helicopter through the trees and safely departed the enemy controlled territory. His steadfast determination and complete disregard for his own safety were instrumental in accomplishing the extremely hazardous mission and undoubtedly saved the life of a fellow Marine. By his extraordinary courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Captain Cobb upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
