The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Captain William B. Clary (MCSN: 0-88003), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action. Captain Clary distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 3 June 1970 while serving as Senior Advisor, 4th Battalion, 5th Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam. On that date, the 4th Battalion was conducting a search and clear mission in search of elements of a North Vietnamese Army unit reportedly in that area. That night, Captain Clary’s battalion was ordered to move their night position to the south. The battalion had moved bout 700 meters when they were subjected to an intense and accurate enemy attack consisting of rocket and automatic weapons fire. Realizing that the battalion was taking heavy casualties, Captain Clary quickly formed his unit into a defensive perimeter. Observing several wounded soldiers who were in the midst of the hostile fire, he braved the heavy fire to make two trips to bring these men back to safety. Once the perimeter was successfully formed, he left his safe position to locate those who were missing. Although receiving intense fire continually, he did not seek shelter until he found the missing and brought them back to the friendly position. The battalion was greatly inspired by his repeated performance of selfless devotion to duty, and they successfully repelled the enemy force. Captain Clary’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Marine Corps and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
