The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Harry C. Christensen (MCSN: 2328989), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company B, Third Tank Battalion, in Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam. On 24 January 1968, while acting as tank commander, Corporal Christensen’s vehicle was ordered into combat against an extensive enemy ambush site. During the maneuver his company commander was seriously wounded while riding on the outside of the tank. Exposing himself to heavy enemy machine gun fire directed against his tank, he moved across the turret to his company commander. While rendering aid, Corporal Christensen was wounded by a rocket propelled grenade exploding on the tank’s turret. Heroically disregarding his own safety, he persisted in trying to drag his unconscious Captain into the tank. Another rocket propelled grenade hit next to him, blowing the company commander off the tank and wounding him a second time on his hands, arms, and face. He returned to command his tank until further rocket propelled grenade hits caused a fire inside the turret. Only then did he order his crew out of the tank and disarm its weapons. His tank’s strategic fire was instrumental in destroying the ambush, and saved many lives. By his daring actions and loyal devotion to duty, even though seriously wounded himself, Corporal Christensen upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
