The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Samuel M. Chism (MCSN: 2200443), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Battery B, First Battalion, 13th Marines, attached to the Fourth Battalion, Twelfth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 17 June 1968, Battery B was conducting a fire mission in support of an infantry unit when the battery position came under enemy artillery fire. Directing all but his assistant gunner to remain in covered positions, Sergeant Chism completely disregarded his own safety as he remained at his gun position and continued to deliver effective fire upon the enemy. As the hostile fire increased in intensity, one enemy round detonated two feet from Sergeant Chism’s position, severely wounding him. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Sergeant Chism inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
