The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jimmy D. Carlisle (MCSN: 2164281), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Guide with Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 29 August 1970, while Company L was conducting a combat patrol in Quang Nam Province, Sergeant Carlisle alertly detected by sound that he had stepped and was in fact standing on an enemy pressure-release type mine. Realizing that any sudden movement on his part might detonate the mine, he dispatched a companion to warn the other members of the Company and to direct them to take cover. When the Marine returned, he instructed him to remove his helmet and protective vest and pile them about his feet to absorb some of the shock and fragments from the mine and then told him to move to a position of safety. After his comrade had reached a place of relative safety, Sergeant Carlisle threw himself into a nearby bomb crater. As a result of his quick actions and the minima protection afforded by the crater, he was uninjured and the members of his patrol were all in secure areas. By his heroic action, presence of mind and selfless concern for the welfare of his companions, Sergeant Carlisle inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
