The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Kenneth Clyde Campbell (MCSN: 1919830), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Sub-Unit ONE, First Air and Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 1 February 1967, in Quang Ngai Province, Sergeant Campbell was serving as a Forward Air Controller and Radio Operator with a reaction force assigned to secure the banks of a river in support of the Second Brigade, Republic of Korea Marine Corps. After clearing a village, the platoon became heavily engaged with an enemy force and immediately sustained several casualties. After a medical evacuation helicopter which Sergeant Campbell had called for was unable to land due to heavy enemy ground fire, he quickly requested and directed an air strike on the helicopter landing zone so that reinforcements could land and the wounded evacuated. When it appeared that the friendly position was going to be overrun by the enemy, Sergeant Campbell found a relatively secure ditch for himself and a wounded Korean Marine companion, and then directed an air strike of 1,000-pound bombs to within fifty yards of his own position. Administering first aid to his wounded companion, he then carried him several hundred yards in a series of precarious escape and evasion maneuvers to an area of relative safety. By his courageous and bold actions, Sergeant Campbell assisted in routing the enemy and was largely responsible for the survival of seventeen Korean Marines that were rescued. By his outstanding professional skill, daring initiative and selfless dedication to duty throughout, Sergeant Campbell upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
