The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Alfredo Cabrera (MCSN: 2105940), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company A, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 6 July 1970, while Sergeant Cabrera led a combined Marine-Popular Forces platoon toward a pre-selected ambush site, the men came under a heavy volume of small arms, automatic weapons, and anti-tank rocket fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force. During the initial moments of the fire fight, Sergeant Cabrera and two other Marines were seriously wounded. Quickly recovering from the initial stunning effects of his wounds, he deployed the platoon into an effective fighting position and, after boldly moving to a dangerously exposed vantage point, skillfully coordinated supporting artillery and AH-1G Cobra helicopter fire with the activities of his men. With the arrival of a reaction force, Sergeant Cabrera, despite the pain of his wounds, rapidly selected and provided security for a helicopter landing site and, when a transport helicopter arrived, supervised the embarkation of his wounded companions. Although weak from the loss of blood, he steadfastly refused medical evacuation himself and, throughout the remainder of the night, continued to patrol the defensive perimeter, valiantly exposing himself to the incessant hostile fusillade to ascertain the welfare of his men and to ensure that every possible avenue of enemy approach was adequately covered by fire. His heroic and determined actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in minimizing friendly casualties. By his courage, superb leadership, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Sergeant Cabrera prevented the numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force from overrunning his platoon and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
