The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Clifton L. Broyer (MCSN: 2249149), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company C, First Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 28 February 1969, Corporal Broyer’s squad was advancing on line with another squad in an attack against a well-entrenched hostile force protected by the fire from mutually supporting bunkers on a hill north of the Rockpile in Quang Tri Province. Almost immediately after the squads commenced their assault up the hill, the entire platoon came under intense small arms and automatic weapons fire from the bunker complex above them. When the advance began to falter as Marines became casualties, Corporal Broyer, undaunted by the extremely heavy volume of enemy fire, completely disregarded his own safety as he fearlessly charged a hostile machine gun position whose fire had wounded his comrades. Ignoring the rounds impacting around him, he boldly threw hand grenades and fired his weapon as he resolutely moved toward the emplacement until mortally wounded by enemy small arms fire. Inspired by his heroic actions, his men aggressively attacked and routed the hostile soldiers and secured their objective. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Boyer upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
