The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal James Garland Brown (MCSN: 2080108), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company H, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 21 April 1966. While attached to and serving with the Second Platoon, as a 3.5 rocket gunner, Lance Corporal Brown exhibited uncommon courage, initiative and extreme professional skill in leaving his position during a heavy Viet Cong attack to deliver accurate rocket fire. Though twice wounded during the engagement, Lance Corporal Brown’s professional skill and daring actions silenced enemy machine gun and mortar positions. Disregarding his personal safety, he braved heavy enemy fire to run to an ammunition bunker and replenish his supply of rockets, and returned to his position to resume firing. His courageous actions inspired his fellow Marines to gain fire superiority over the attacking enemy and effectively ward off their attack. By his daring actions and loyal devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal risk, Lance Corporal Brown upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
