The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer [then Staff Sergeant] Albert K. Britton (MCSN: 1820832), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company G, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 30 March 1968, while maneuvering across an open area to attack the enemy occupied village of Nhi Ha in Quang Tri Province, Company G came under a heavy volume of mortar, rocket, artillery, and automatic weapons fire from within the village. Unhesitatingly exposing himself top the fusillade, Warrant Officer Britton boldly crawled from one Marine position to another to ascertain the welfare of his men and to ensure close communication with platoons on the flanks of his unit. Pinpointing the principal sources of hostile fire, he initiated an aggressive assault against the enemy with such skill and daring that his men were able to fight their way through the hail of hostile fire to the outskirts of the village, driving the enemy soldiers on the perimeter from their firing emplacements and drawing other hostile fire away from the main body of the company which, thus relieved, provided support to adjacent companies which had been pinned down. In an attempt to regain their defensive positions, the North Vietnamese Army force launched a strong counter-attack, supported by intense artillery fire, but Warrant Officer Britton, seemingly heedless of the rounds impacting around him, constantly moved among his men to direct their fire and exhort them to maximum combat efforts and, by so doing, successfully repelled the assault while the remainder of Company G maneuvered into a position from which to launch its own counterattack. His heroic and determined efforts during the twelve-hour battle inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in minimizing Marine casualties. By his courage, superb military acumen, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, Warrant Officer Britton enabled his valiant group to thwart the fanatical and numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
