The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert Bright, III (MCSN: 0-103841/1692324), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with the Third Force Reconnaissance Company, Third Reconnaissance Battalion, THIRD Marine Division on 21 October 1966 in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a seven man reconnaissance patrol deep in enemy controlled territory, Corporal Bright’s patrol was moving from a helicopter landing zone when it was suddenly taken under fire by a numerically superior enemy force. During the initial burst of hostile fire, the patrol leader was mortally wounded and the patrol’s advance was temporarily halted. Reacting instantly, Corporal Bright quickly moved from his rear guard position to deliver effective automatic weapons fire on the enemy. Aggressively and with complete disregard for his own safety, he repeatedly exposed himself to intense Viet Cong fire in order to locate the enemy positions in the thick underbrush. Alternately firing his M-79 grenade launcher and automatic rifle, he killed three Viet Cong and courageously continued to provide covering fire while his companions retrieved the patrol leader’s body. The patrol then returned to the helicopter landing zone where Corporal Bright continued to provide protective fire until his comrades were safely aboard the evacuation helicopter. His selfless and heroic actions undoubtedly prevented further casualties to his patrol, were a determining factor in the death of seven Viet Cong and inspired all who observed him. By his uncommon concern for the welfare of his fellow Marines, daring initiative, inspiring leadership and loyal devotion to duty, Corporal Bright upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
