The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles William Bosley (MCSN: 2122523), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Scout Team Member with Company C, First Reconnaissance Battalion, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in action against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. Shortly after midnight on 16 June 1966, Private First Class Bosley’s eighteen-man patrol was occupying an observation post deep within enemy controlled territory in the vicinity of Chi Tu, Quang Tin Province, when a Viet Cong force of estimated battalion size crept close to the Marines’ position and, on a predetermined signal, launched a vicious attack with small arms, grenades, automatic weapons and mortar fire. While defending a sector of the perimeter which was subjected to extremely intense enemy fire, Private First Class Bosley noticed that his team’s grenadier had been wounded and was lying in a position of imminent danger. Without regard for his own safety, Private First Class Bosley unhesitatingly exposed himself to the murderous incoming fire to provide covering fire for the wounded man and the Corpsman who was treating him. Later in the battle, he exhibited great presence of mind and unselfishness when he saw an enemy grenade land dangerously close to one of the casualties. Reacting instantly, he raced to the man and pulled him to safety before the grenade exploded. Although he sustained painful wounds in the course of the night’s engagement, he valiantly continued to assist in the defense of the hill against the relentless enemy attack. The courage and professionalism he exhibited on this, his first encounter with the enemy, contributed in large measure to preventing the entire unit from being killed or captured. Private First Class Bosley’s outstanding concern for others at the great risk of his own life, daring initiative and loyal devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
