The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Frank McHugh Campbell (NSN: 0-6623326), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism and conspicuous devotion to duty while serving as a Medical Corpsman with the Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan in the Mariana Islands. On 2 July 1944, Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Campbell unhesitatingly went out into completely open country to attend and evacuate a wounded man. The area where the wounded man lay was under rifle and machine gun fire, and was considered extremely dangerous since two men had already been hit by this enemy fire in their attempts to rescue the wounded man. Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Campbell fully understood the danger but, with utter disregard for his own life and in selfless devotion to duty, he proceeded to the wounded man and succeeded in caring for his needs and in carrying him to safety. His conduct and bravery were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
