The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Robert Henry Bergeron (MCSN: 1375888), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Platoon Commander with the Third Platoon, Company K, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam, on 27 September 1966. During Operation PRAIRIE in Quang Tri Province, Staff Sergeant Bergeron’s platoon, as lead element for the Battalion, Came under intense enemy machine gun and small arms fire and grenade attack. In addition, three electric mines were detonated. Despite the fact that Staff Sergeant Bergeron suffered a severe concussion from the detonated mines, which left him unconscious for five minutes, upon regaining consciousness he fearlessly and resolutely regained control of his unit, returning accurate suppressive fire upon the enemy which permitted the evacuation of the wounded. As the North Vietnamese force continued the attack, exploiting their momentary success, Staff Sergeant Bergeron rallied his platoon and withstood the enemy with grenades and small arms fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, he continually exposed himself to the intense fire and killed two of the enemy. His leadership and courageous actions inspired his men as they routed the enemy forces. By his extraordinary courage, intrepid fighting spirit, and loyal devotion to duty in the face of personal risk, Staff Sergeant Bergeron upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
