The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Sam Roy Baker, II (MCSN: 1973607), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company A, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 10 August 1966, During Operation COLORADO, Sergeant Baker exhibited uncommon courage and determination when his unit became heavily engaged with the enemy in the vicinity of Tam Ky. Observing that three of his fellow Marines had been hit and disabled in an exposed rice paddy, and that others had been unable to reach them, Sergeant Baker valiantly braved the withering fire to assist the stricken men and at the same time return a malfunctioning M-60 machine gun to operation. Although he was severely wounded during his daring effort, he crawled toward his squad and skillfully directed the remainder of his men in an assault on the Viet Cong automatic weapons position which was responsible for his wounds. Despite the fact that he was hit again by the enemy fire, he effectively maintained control of his men and position, displaying grim determination and inspiring leadership which encouraged his men to fight with renewed spirit and eliminate the hostile weapons position. His resolute effort throughout to assist his comrades, although suffering greatly himself, was a source of great inspiration to all who observed him. By his extraordinary bravery in the face of overwhelming odds, bold initiative and unswerving dedication to duty throughout, Sergeant Baker upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
