The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Jerry R. Akers (MCSN: 0-94503), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company L, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 28 February 1967. During Operation PRAIRIE II, Second Lieutenant Akers’ company was on a search and clear operation northwest of Cam Lo in Quang Tri Province when an estimated North Vietnamese Army battalion launched a pre-dawn attack on his unit, utilizing 82-mm. mortars, hand grenades, automatic weapons, and small arms. With his platoon receiving the brunt of the vicious attack, he completely disregarded his own safety and braved the hostile fire to organize his men and direct accurate fire on the advancing enemy. As a result of his decisive actions, the enemy was forced to break contact and withdraw. Later the same day, the North Vietnamese force again attacked withy mortars, automatic weapons, and small arms fire, wounding his platoon sergeant and a Corpsman. Observing that the casualties were unable to move to safety, Second Lieutenant Akers, although painfully wounded in the leg, advanced through the intense fire and carried the men to a covered position where he skillfully administered first aid. His heroic and daring actions undoubtedly saved their lives. Throughout the fire fight, Second Lieutenant Akers continued to inspire and encourage his men in repulsing the enemy attack and assisted many of his wounded companions. Refusing medical evacuation for himself, he courageously remained with his unit for two days until reinforcements arrived. By his exceptional leadership, military skill, sincere concern for the welfare of his men and selfless devotion to duty, Second Lieutenant Akers upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
