The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Peter Frederick Addesso (MCSN: 2281600), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in connection with military operations against the enemy while serving as a Squad Leader, Third Platoon, Hotel Company, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 3 February 1968. During actions to recapture the city, Corporal Addesso assumed control of his squad and other supporting elements due to injuries to senior personnel. Under his direction, the squad established a base of fire for the assault against enemy forces of an undetermined strength. Despite heavy enemy fire and several attempts by the enemy to overwhelm his position, Corporal Addesso repeatedly moved through the fire-swept position and encouraged his men to aggressively suppress the enemy offensives. Although seriously wounded by a rocket propelled grenade, he continued to lead his men until relieved at his post and medevaced. Due to his determination and fighting spirit, the platoon successfully completed all objectives. By his initiative, courageous action, and unyielding devotion to duty, Corporal Addesso reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
