The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Wilmot H. Wolf (MCSN: 339975), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an ammunition carrier and later as a machine gun squad leader of Company G, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands from 15 September to 13 October 1944. Noticing a wounded Marine on board a burning LVT approximately seventy-five yards from his position Private First Class Wolf immediately braved intense hostile fire to rescue the casualty and move him to an aid station. On another occasion, when his gunner and assistant gunner were wounded while crossing a draw enfiladed by heavy enemy automatic fire he crawled back to apply dressings to his comrades and carrying both gun and tripod after assuring his comrade’s evacuation, safely led the remainder of his squad to join their platoon. After receiving treatment for wounds suffered on two subsequent occasions he consistently refused evacuation to remain with his unit. His outstanding courage, devotion to duty and grave concern for the welfare of others were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
