The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain Henry James McDonald Radcliffe (MCSN: 0-81002), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as the Commanding Officer of Company A, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 8 February 1968, while occupying a defensive position near Khe Sanh, elements of Company A were assaulted by a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force and were in danger of being overrun. Upon being informed of the situation, Captain Radcliffe quickly organized a reaction force and led the Marines to the assistance of the besieged unit. As the reaction force neared the friendly position, it came under a heavy volume of automatic weapons fire and began receiving hand grenades. Disregarding his own safety, Captain Radcliffe skillfully deployed his men and led an assault on the hostile positions. Ignoring the enemy rounds impacting around him, he fearlessly moved forward, throwing hand grenades, and destroyed two hostile emplacements. When an enemy hand grenade landed near him, he quickly picked up the grenade and threw it toward the hostile positions, killing a North Vietnamese soldier. After his men had overrun the enemy positions and routed the hostile force, he established a defensive perimeter and supervised the evacuation of casualties. His professionalism and outstanding leadership inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in preventing the loss of a vital position. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Captain Radcliffe upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
