The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Donald Jones (MCSN: 904362), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian Island, Mariana Islands, 1 August 1944. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrific fire from Japanese guns, Private First Class Jones rendered valiant service during operations on this strategically important island. When his platoon was pinned down and the intensity of the fire from a hostile machine gun was demoralizing the men, he rose to his feet and advanced alone on the Japanese emplacement. Although he was killed before reaching the machine gun, his daring initiative had inspired his comrades to press on and neutralize the enemy position. His self-sacrificing spirit and unswerving devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Jones and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
