The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Bruce Walter Grunewald (MCSN: 2286172), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Assistant Team Leader with Third Force Reconnaissance Company, Third Reconnaissance Battalion, THIRD Marine Division (Reinforced), in connection with operations against the enemy for the Republic of Vietnam. On 8 March 1968, Corporal Grunewald was a member of a long-range reconnaissance patrol operating northwest of Ca Lu when his patrol leader suddenly observed a large North Vietnamese Army force within twenty-five meters of his defensive position. Reacting instantly, Corporal Grunewald commenced delivering a heavy volume of accurate machine-gun fire on the hostile soldiers, killing two of the enemy. Although seriously wounded, he fearlessly exposed himself to the hostile fire and maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain to more effectively employ his machine gun. Ignoring his painful injuries, he repeatedly delivered suppressive fire upon the hostile force until he succumbed to his wounds. His heroic and timely actions were an inspiration to all who observed him and prevented his patrol from sustaining additional casualties. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit, and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Grunewald upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
