The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Colonel Wallace Martin Greene, Jr. (NSN: 0-4539), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Assistant Chief of Staff, Operations Officer of a Marine Division prior to and during actions against enemy forces on Saipan and Tinian, Mariana Islands, from 15 June to 3 August 1944. Lieutenant Colonel Greene, by his outstanding professional ability and foresight; and by his planning and coordination of the activities under his supervision, thoroughly and efficiently indoctrinated and trained the Division for both the ship-to-shore and inland phases of these operations. During the periods of combat, his sound knowledge and understanding of military tactics were of material value to the success of the operations of the division. He worked unceasingly and his energy and zeal were unsurpassed. His loyalty, efficiency and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
