The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George W. Gardner (MCSN: 319259), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 9 July 1944. Volunteering to assist the Platoon leader on a hazardous mission, Sergeant Gardner courageously worked his way to an enemy-occupied strong point to rescue two Marine casualties. Although wounded himself during this encounter, he brought the men back to safety, thereby undoubtedly saving their lives. His courage, devotion to duty and grave concern for the welfare of others were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
