The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Leonard R. Young (MCSN: 254876), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company D, Second Battalion, Twenty-Eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 3 March 1945. When fierce mortar, machine-gun and rifle fire pinned down his company during its attack on a strongly-fortified ridge, First Sergeant Young unhesitatingly exposed himself to this fire in order to direct the employment o this company’s machine guns. By his sound judgment in the selection of advantageous positions for the guns and his skillful direction of their fire which completely silenced the enemy, he enabled his company to continue its advance. Although seriously wounded by a hostile sniper, he refused to be evacuated and remained on the front lines to lead the machine gun section until the ridge had been taken. By his indomitable fighting spirit and able leadership, he contributed materially to the successful accomplishment of his company’s mission, and his unswerving devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
