The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Sergeant John F. Summers (MCSN: 489877), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Assistant Platoon Leader of the First Tank Battalion, Fleet Marine Force, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 11 June 1945. When his tank ran over two large land mines which completely shattered the suspension system while attacking far in advance of friendly lines, Sergeant Summers ordered his crew to remain temporarily within the comparative safety of the tank and to continue firing and, dismounting from the vehicle while under heavy enemy fire, reconnoitered for a covered route of egress from his tank to friendly lines. Succeeding in this mission, he returned to his vehicle and, after removing all material of military importance, courageously led his crew to safety. His outstanding coolness and devotion to duty under fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
