The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain William J. Stewart (MCSN: 0-13530), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company L, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, Third Amphibious Corps, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 27 July 1944. During the assault on Orote Peninsula, Captain Stewart led his men against the full force of the enemy resistance and, although his company suffered severe losses, sustained a steady advance in the day-long fight. His leadership and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Captain Stewart and the United States Naval Service.
