The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Waldo Edgar Zimmerman (MCSN: 832037), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of a Demolition Team of Company C, First Battalion, Eighteenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 15 June to 3 July 1944. Frequently braving heavy enemy fire, Private First Class Zimmerman neutralized enemy positions with demolitions of a flame thrower and, with the aid of his teammate, accounted for approximately one hundred and fifty enemy casualties. On 3 July he suffered severe wounds while advancing on an enemy position to neutralize it. His courage and devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
