The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Michael J. Wynne (MCSN: 351083), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with a 60-mm. mortar section of Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Asan-Adelup Beachhead, Guam, Mariana Islands on the night of 22-23 July 1944. Remaining in position despite the withdrawal of riflemen on his right and left, Corporal Wynne continued to direct 60-mm. mortar fire on the enemy during a fierce hostile counter attack. As the attack increased in intensity and Japanese soldiers occupied several fox holes on either side of him and within twenty-five yards of his own position he unhesitatingly brought fire to bear on these positions and succeeded in forcing the Japanese to withdraw. He then personally directed the riflemen in reoccupying these fox holes until he was wounded by enemy mortar fire. By his perseverance and courage under fire, Corporal Wynne aided materially in repulsing the hostile attack and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
