The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Donald E. Wyatt (MCSN: 521733), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as an automatic rifleman serving with Company G, Third Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands on 24 February 1945. Seeing that two wounded men at the front were lying in an exposed spot and that no one could get to them because the entire platoon was pinned down by a machine gun which had allowed it to advance completely into its field before opening fire, Private First Class Wyatt worked himself to a point from which he could fire at the pill box and leaving his covered position ran toward another spot much closer to the enemy gun firing his weapon as he ran until killed by the enemy barrage. His courageous fighting spirit and utter disregard for his own personal safety reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Wyatt and the United States Naval Service. Private First Class Donald E. Wyatt gallantly gave his life for his country.
