The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James A. Worthington (MCSN: 406213), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a fire team leader of Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 16 May 1945. During an attack by his company on Oroku Peninsula, Private First Class Worthington observed two of his comrades fall in an area exposed to hostile fire. Voluntarily leaving a position of comparative safety he made his way to the first wounded, in the face of enemy machine gun, mortar and rifle fire, dragged the casualty to safety and returned for the other wounded man. While rescuing the second casualty he killed an enemy sniper and after successfully evacuating both of the wounded Marines, administered first aid. Returning to attempt the rescue of a third casualty, Private First Class Worthington was seriously wounded and had to be evacuated. By his bold initiative and coolness under heavy fire, he was instrumental in saving the lives of the two casualties and his courageous conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
