The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James M. Worsley (MCSN: 479059), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Battery H, Third Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands on 7 July 1944. During a devastating enemy counter attack, Private First Class Worsley lay under an artillery piece and expertly used his carbine to cover the withdrawal of his section and continued the protecting fire until the wounded were moved out. Upon leaving the position he courageously rammed home a round in the howitzer and fired the piece single-handedly on the advancing Japanese. His courageous action, unselfish regard for his own safety and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
