The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Henry D. Woodworth, Jr. (MCSN: 0-42120), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a platoon leader attached to Company E, Second Battalion First Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese held Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Group on 11 May 1945. While leading an assault on a strongly held enemy ridge, Second Lieutenant Woodworth located a hostile pill box which was holding up the advance of his company and with complete disregard for his own personal safety assaulted and destroyed the pill box with hand grenades killing several of the enemy. Mortally wounded during this action, Lieutenant Woodworth by his courageous initiative inspired his men to advance and seize his company’s objective. His heroism and unselfish devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
