The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Nicholas Woloshuk, Jr. (MCSN: 983186), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a runner of the Twenty-second Marines, SIXTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 18 June 1945. When the Regimental Commander and his party were prevented from moving forward because of heavy enemy rifle fire, Private First Woloshuk voluntarily moved through the hostile fire to obtain a supply of hand grenades. Then, in company with another Marine and still under heavy fire, he attacked the enemy position with grenades and rifle fire, killing thirteen Japanese. A few moments later when his Regimental Commander was wounded by an enemy sniper, he again braved hostile fire to obtain medial aide for the wounded officer and returning to his position sought out and annihilated two of the remaining enemy riflemen. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Woloshuk and the United States Naval Service.
