The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Jack Wolfenden (MCSN: 379600), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Bougainville, British Solomon Islands on 7 November 1943. When his five companions were wounded after penetrating an area covered by four enemy machine guns, Private First Class Wolfenden braved the hostile fire to make his way to a supporting tank. Proceeding on foot ahead of the tank he guided the armored vehicle through enemy fire to a location from which the Japanese machine gun positions were destroyed. Then after carrying his wounded comrades to safety he returned to his unit and rejoined the attack. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Wolfenden and the United States Naval Service.
