The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Henry J. Witt (MCSN: 1136800), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Assistant Gunner of Company H, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 19 October 1951. When the combat patrol he was accompanying was subjected to devastating automatic weapons fire from enemy positions on commanding ground, Private First Class Witt fearlessly charged forward over open ground in the face of the deadly fire. Armed with only a pistol, he initiated a daring assault against a hostile bunker and succeeded in killing two of the enemy. By his aggressive fighting spirit, inspiring courage and unswerving devotion to duty, Private First Class Witt contributed materially to the success of his patrol’s mission and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
