The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Claude C. Winkler (MCSN: 433199), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the photographic section, Third Amphibious Corps, Fleet Marine Force during the invasion of the enemy Japanese held Island of Guam, Mariana Islands in July 1944. A skilled and aggressive combat cameraman, Corporal Winkler landed on the heavily fortified beachhead with the second assault wave under continuous intense hostile fire and working tirelessly throughout the bitter operation, obtained vital photographs of the action for use by Marine Intelligence and Public Relations. Volunteering to photograph a dog platoon flushing out enemy snipers on Orote Peninsula on 28 July, he fearlessly pressed forward despite the extreme danger and while remaining in his exposed position recording the ensuing action was fatally struck down by enemy sniper fire. His daring initiative, outstanding professional ability and cool courage in the face of grave peril throughout this and numerous previous combat missions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
