The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Raymond R. Windle (MCSN: 294769), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as leader of a machine gun platoon of Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 12 March 1945. When numerous spider traps, three pill boxes and heavy mortar fire held up the advance of his company, Sergeant Windle placed his machine guns in position and moved forward to ascertain the situation which he reported to his Commanding Officer. Upon the arrival of the supporting tanks he had requested he personally directed their movement to targets holding up the advance and moved from one platoon to another giving advice and encouragement to the men and to the Corporals who were acting platoon leaders. By his skill, initiative and exemplary courage he contributed materially to the continued advance of his company and his unselfish devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
