The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Walter R. Wilson (MCSN: 0-18597), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company B, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 89 May 1945. Leading his rifle company against strongly entrenched enemy forces on a vital ridge, First Lieutenant Wilson skillfully directed his men as to the most advantageous positions to utilize their limited firepower. Despite the company’s extremely critical position at nightfall due to heavy casualties from the severe mortar and small arms fire, he enabled his troops to repel three Japanese counter attacks during the night, repeatedly reconnoitering the lines to prevent enemy infiltration. Working tirelessly, he subjected himself to both friendly and hostile fire as he moved from man to man through the inky darkness, rallying them to heroic efforts in repelling the attacking enemy. At one time, realizing the imminence of a breakthrough he personally reorganized the threatened point in the face of devastating hostile fire, effectively preventing the Japanese from disorganizing the defenses. First Lieutenant Wilson’s brilliant leadership, aggressive fighting spirit and inspiring devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
