The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Robert C. Wilson (MCSN: 399591), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a squad leader serving with Company A, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 14 June 1945. Alert and courageous, Corporal Wilson fearlessly led his gallant squad in a ferocious assault on Japanese controlled Kunishi Ridge fighting with aggressive determination against relentless blasts of grenade, mortar and automatic weapon fire emanating from strongly fortified enemy emplacements well concealed in and around a coral pinnacle. Courageously defying the devastating fire he skillfully directed his men over the jagged coral formation toward a strategic position from which he launched his vicious onslaught, persevering in his attacks until he had destroyed several Japanese pill boxes and inflicted numerous casualties before he himself fell mortally wounded. By his valiant leadership and unfaltering devotion to duty in the face of grave peril, Corporal Wilson contributed greatly to the ultimate completion of his company’s mission and his heroic conduct throughout upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
